All Alone: Holden's Abandonment (#6)

Holden was abandoned by his parents. They did not abandon him on purpose, and they do care for him, but they undoubtably abandoned him. His parents sent him off to boarding school after boarding school, probably to give him the best chance of success, but these actions distanced them, emotionally and physically, from Holden.

Holden's well-grounded feelings of abandonment explain his actions over the course of the book. He would not have refused to confront his parents about his performance at school. Holden went to great lengths to avoid any interaction with his parents, and it is hard to believe he would have done the same thing if he had been closer to his parents. If he was closer to his parents, he would have felt comfortable enough to talk to them, and he would not have run off on an adventure instead. Holden would have behaved differently if he had been closer to his parents.
